About Open Source Searching:
Need to research a business or individual? Participants in the Open Source Searching class will learn how to find sources of free and reliable background information online.
Many agencies and organizations cannot afford to subscribe to paid information databases for background searching. Additionally, more and more information is not found in a subscription product but in savvy searching of social networks and publicly accessible databases.
In the course of their work, crime analysts may need to perform online background searches of clients, witnesses, family members, etc. Learning simple tips such as creating a checklist can lead to more efficient and effective searching. A new area of concern is how search strings stored by search engines such as Google may recreate unintended relationships.
Attendees will learn about 20-25 different websites for accessing free background information on individuals and businesses. Attendees will also learn about how to “tread lightly” while doing online sleuthing.
